Yayoi Kusama Emerges as the Top Contemporary Artist by Auction Sales in 2023

According to the most recent Hiscox Artist Top 100 report, Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama earned the highest total auction sales among contemporary artists in 2023. At age 95, Kusama’s artworks brought in approximately $80.9 million over the course of the year, surpassing the auction results of British artist David Hockney, who previously held the top position with around $50.3 million in sales. Among Kusama’s auction successes, her 2014 painting A Flower achieved the highest individual price, fetching close to $10 million at a Christie’s sale in Hong Kong. This performance contributed significantly to her total market value for the year. Observer
