A mural by the celebrated street artist Banksy, depicting a man hanging out of a bedroom window to evade a love rival, will soon go up for auction alongside the building on which it was painted. Her Fine Art
The work, known as Well Hung Lover, was created in 2006 on the exterior wall of what was then a sexual health clinic in Bristol, UK. Banksy — a native of the city — later disclosed that he had not realised the purpose of the building when he painted the piece. Her Fine Art
Hollis Morgan, the estate agency handling the sale, has listed the Grade II-listed Georgian property with a new 250-year lease, so the mural is effectively part of the lot. The five-storey building, situated near Bristol Cathedral and the University of Bristol, currently includes a basement nightclub and is being marketed for its potential to be converted into student accommodation or similar residential use. Her Fine Art
The artwork’s future on the facade has been addressed by the selling agent. Bristol City Council does not maintain a formal policy for street art, regardless of its creator, and Hollis Morgan has emphasised that such works are not considered permanently fixed features of buildings; they weather, change, or may be painted over over time. The lease will include a restrictive covenant that prohibits removing the mural, but the buyer will not be obliged to maintain it or insure it while it remains visible. Her Fine Art
The listing’s guide price sits just below USD 900,000, a figure that reflects the property and its iconic mural together, though it is modest compared with the tens of millions fetched by some of Banksy’s other works at auction. Her Fine Art
